Epi 135: Practicing Non-Attachment - Mini Mindset Reset
Nothing gives you emotional freedom, inner peace, and balance, like releasing the outcome of any given moment and practicing non-attachment.
Demi from Berlin, Germany, wrote in and said, “I’m new to your audience as I just found your podcast six weeks ago. In the episodes I’ve listened to, you say our brains are wired to keep us safe. I’ve been thinking about this over the last few weeks and wondered if that is why I always feel I need control over things. I can’t enjoy a night out with friends without a schedule. I have ended relationships with romantic partners because I felt I needed to keep their agendas, which made me feel like I was out of control of how I spent my time. I like everything planned and spelled out. I don’t like the “control freak” label, but I know that’s what I am. So, my first question is: is control a form of safety? And secondly, is there something I can do to stop living this way? I know I make things harder on myself.”
The first question is so on point, and it’s a moment of realization I hope everyone can soak in and recognize. Is control a form of safety?
One thousand percent yes.
The craziest piece to all this is when you decide you will be present and let go of control; you gain control. You gain mental control of allowing. You gain emotional control to not be tied to what may not unfold. Non-attachment is freedom. The Dalai Lama said: “Attachment is the origin, the root of suffering; hence it is the cause of suffering.”
Practice non-attachment with this simple tool:
Start questioning your motives for the attachment.
Become mindful of our attachments based on your feelings.
Lean into choice.
Letting go.
Practice these steps. Witness that you are already empowered to thrive in your life. You don’t have to control. One beautiful affirmation you can offer yourself while you build this practice into your daily habitual thinking is: I am willing to see how and where my life goes while I actively enjoy my moments.
