Ask A Therapist: Finding Sincere Gratitude

Research tells us our lives are fuller and happier than we often give ourselves credit. Roughly 90% of our lives are good, while only 10% can be justified as “bad” or unsettling. When we have our numbers reversed, it’s because we do not practice sincere gratitude. In this week’s conversation, we look at what it means to find daily sincere gratitude: seeking, acknowledging, and appreciating the good in your life and the experiences, feelings, thoughts, people, etc. that contribute to it. Sincere gratitude is about feeling your way into your life through a sense of humility and value. We’ll explore a simple gratitude practice that you can use daily to increase the quality of your thoughts and mindset.

Ask A Therapist: Breaking Down The Question: What Do I Want?

There are four questions I ask myself daily: 1. What do I want? 2. What do I need? 3. How do I want to feel? 4. How will I get there? These four questions are direction-pointers that guide my thoughts, feelings, and actions. Over the next four weeks, we are exploring these four questions to help you set up and create a healthy, intention-focused 2025. We start this week with question one, exploring how to find what you want in life now and in the future.

Ask A Therapist: Breaking Down The Question: What Do I Need?

Continuing our journey through the four questions that are daily guideposts, we turn to examining what you need. To figure out what you need, we need to look at and tune into your current state of living—physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and even financially. Where do you feel most energized? Where do you feel drained? Reflecting on these states reveals what we need to shift or increase. We will break down these states and ask a host of questions to help you identify your needs and help you make changes to reach the good.

Ask A Therapist: Breaking Down The Question: How Do I Want To Feel?

Continuing our journey through the four questions that are the guideposts to your life’s experience, we turn to the question: How Do I Want To Feel? The quickest and most straightforward answer is “good,” “happy,” and “positive,” but that begs the question of why. Why do you want to feel that way? What is stopping you now from that good feeling? What can you increase or let go of to have a more constant base of what you want to feel? In this week’s conversation, we explore the question and walk through steps to identify what emotions you want active daily.

Ask A Therapist: How Anger Hides Other Emotions

Anger is a hot emotion. It works to tell us something is wrong and helps guide us to mental, emotional, and physical safety. It is not inherently bad, as it can motivate change. However, it is sneaky as it hides in other emotions, such as sadness, disappointment, and guilt. When this is present, anger can simmer into frustration and resentment. In this week’s conversation, we are diving into recognizing hidden anger, why you sometimes need the emotion, and how to transform it into something constructive.

Ask A Therapist: Emotional Bypassing Vs Emotional Processing

Ask A Therapist: Emotional Bypassing Vs Emotional Processing

Our emotions are guides, impulses, to direct your thoughts and feelings toward what is most important to you in the short and long run. In times of heightened emotions, trauma, or even day-to-day living that feels heavier, many of us have the habit of pushing our emotions aside and bypassing the need/act of processing what is currently working to get our attention. In this week's Ask A Therapist, we are breaking down the difference between emotional bypassing and emotional processing, and I'm handing over a tool that helps you break down what is happening within the span of your day that may cause you to create the bypassing in the first place. When we do not check in, offer ourselves a gauge point, we often do not address what's needed and necesssary until a problem or emotion begins to overwhelm us. Learning how to process correctly, in the moment an emotion occurs, and doing so with a gounded process helps you live mindfully, actively, and with a great sense of joy. Can't wait to join you this coming Monday! Don't forget to join the Ask A Therapist Group under my teacher profile to ask questions before or after this conversation.

Forty-four percent of our nation’s adults are reading and writing at a fourth-grade level. What’s even scarier is nearly 20 percent of high schoolers graduated last year without the skill to read.

Despite this staggering facts, the White House has released its proposed budget for FY2019 that slashes federal funding for a vital tool in education— libraries and museums.
