EPI 196: The Bipolar Brain: From Broken to Blessed with Sara Schley
According to the World Health Organization, bipolar disorder is one of the top three causes of hospitalization in people aged 15 to 44. It’s estimated that 5% of the world’s population is on the bipolar spectrum and of that 5%, only 1 to 2% are diagnosed. And while those percentages may seem small, with over 8 billion people currently in the world, we are talking about over 400 million people with bipolar brains.
It’s far more common than you think. In the US alone, around 4.4% of adults deal with or develop bipolar disorder, and the numbers show it impacts more females than males.
I sat down with author and fimmaker Sara Schley to talk about her experience with bipolar disorder and how she has turned what she calls her broken into a blessing as she serves the world by spreading knowledge and resources for those who believe there’s little hope out there. In fact, that’s the furthest from the truth. So, whether you have a diagnosis, know someone who does, or has it genetically within your family, this moving, impactful conversation is filled with understanding, truths, science, and community.

This week’s question comes from Ash Moore in New York City, NY. She wrote in and said, “Hi, Danielle. I’ve been listening to your podcast religiously for six months now. I take notes and do my best to put what you teach into place in my life. I’ve had great success in many ways over those last six months. I feel happier. I can tell the difference in my attitude. My thoughts are clearer, and my emotions are much better. But, I’ve been thinking about all the things I shouldn’t do that could be impacting my physical, emotional, and mental health. I know not getting enough rest, at least for me, is one that I struggle with. That has led me to ask, “Are there habits that impact us that we should watch out for or should be quickly changing?”

Epi 185: Centering Myself in the Now - An Active, Guided Meditation
Welcome to this active, guided meditation. This is a space we are not trying to solve any problems; instead, this is a space of release, calm, and building your self-love.
Please settle in now, finding a comfortable position as you relax your shoulders down your spine. With slow and steady breath, open your mouth, moving your jaw up and down, and letting go of any tension. Gently move your head from side to side while softening into the moment.
As you settle, deepen your breath, inhaling through your nose, allowing your breath to find the bottom of your lungs, and softly release it through your nose with a slow and steady exhale. Continue to breathe with both ease and effort.

The past often works to own our present and our future because what has been gone unhealed and unaddressed. We tend to believe that if we simply move on, what was will fall away.
Yet, this thinking robs us of a beautiful opportunity and great expansion. The events in our lives are lessons, building blocks that teach us what we came here to learn, ways of being, our desires. Our experiences teach us contrast. It shows what we want and what we do not. In this understanding, we can go deeper and explore our needs spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
